About the farm
Sambewe AMCOS is a cooperative of 442 coffee producers from five neighbouring villages—Sambewe, Itumpi, Nansama, Iyenga and Ileya—in the Songwe region of southwestern Tanzania. Founded in 2018, the cooperative was established to improve coffee quality and strengthen local processing capacity through collective effort.
Every afternoon, freshly picked coffee cherries are delivered to the washing station, where they are sorted, depulped and fermented for 18 to 36 hours. The coffee is then thoroughly washed, soaked and dried on raised beds for 8–14 days. Grown at 1,616 metres above sea level in clay loam soils and a stable climate, coffees from Sambewe are known for their clean cup profile and well-balanced structure.
The cooperative continues to invest in its future, with plans to build a new processing facility, renovate its office and warehouse, and plant more native shade trees to help preserve the land and support the local ecosystem.
A local legend tells of a python that has watched over the nearby river for generations.
